Tyrrell Hatton was crowned Turkish Airlines Open champion after a record-equalling six-man play-off that took place under floodlights for the first time in professional golf at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal.

Hatton overcame Austrian Matthias Schwab on the fourth play-off hole with a par to secure his fourth European Tour win and a cheque for $2million.

The Englishman shot 67 to move level with overnight leader Schwab, Frenchmen Victor Perez and Benjamin Hebert, American Kurt Kitayama and South African Erik van Rooyen.

After Perez, Hebert and Van Rooyen were eliminated in the first play-off hole and Kitayama was knocked out in the third after the lights were turned on.

Hatton’s par on the fourth hole was enough the earn him a first win in two years and he said: “It's hard to put into words. It's just been a crazy day. Obviously the playoff was mental, and I'm just so happy to win again. 

“I said to my team that if I was lucky enough to win again, then I definitely would enjoy it more. I think it's easy to take for granted, and I mean that in the best terms possible. But yeah, it's incredible to get my fourth win on The European Tour and obviously that wraps up the Masters for next year, as well.”

There was disappointment for Schwab, who is still chasing his first European Tour win and the 24-year-old said: “I’m not too great, obviously but it was a close call. I had some good looks and good chances coming down the stretch in regular play, and didn't take advantage of them. In the playoff, it is what it is.”

Defending champion Justin Rose shared 21st place at the seventh Turkish Airlines Open.
